Born to perform

A Real Star

There are many ways to describe Shorty Mic, but unique, talented, and charismatic just seem to scratch the surface. However, there is one word that ties them all together and is true to his character: Shorty Mic is Real. Few people rap so honestly from their heart and soul. Shorty Mic does so in just the right way, combining art, story, and hot beats in perfect unison. Take a look around the website, and explore what the gift of music truly is.

Born 17th July 1985, Michael James Goral, better known by his stage name "SHORTY MIC", spent most of his life in the North Western Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows. Life was hard growing up, being from a low income family surrounded by domestic violence and drugs. This led to his family moving around Melbourne and the country of Victoria many times. There was no stability in his life so music became that constant that he desperately needed, it was something he could count on.
The first CD his mother bought him was Notorious B.I.G 'Mo Money Mo Problems' and it changed his perspective on music forever. His love for Hip Hop began and it became a way of life for him.

As a teenager Michael tried to rekindle his estranged relationship with his father and decided to move back to the gritty streets of Broadmeadows. It didn't go well and he found himself out on the streets with no money, no job, no food or shelter. He overcame homelessness and hustled the streets to put food in his stomach and put himself through school. He learnt many things about life and about himself on the streets and he had discovered that music was the only thing there for him.
Michael started writing his own music, heavily influenced by West Coast artists such as Tupac, NWA, Ice Cube, Nate Dogg and Dr Dre. He started to develop his own sound which could be likened to a fusion between West Coast/New York/Detroit Hip Hop.
Other influences in his music are Eminem, Obie Trice, Royce da 5'9, 50 Cent, Twista and KRS ONE.

Michael proudly produces and composes his own beats and has recently completed his Bachelor of music composition and production at Australian Institute of Music.
Having begun originally as an R&B singer, he shows that he is a very versatile artist who is constantly improving with each track he produces and releases. He has overcome many personal afflictions in his life, homelessness, no money, bad relationships as well as being judged for not being the stereotypical Australian rapper. Because of this, his lyrics are real and have attracted attention from National and International artists as well as International radio stations.

Shorty Mic is heavily influenced by American Hip Hop which reflects in his music. His many influences come out in his beats, his style and his voice, including a non Australian accent, something he has had to fight for to prove it belongs in the Melbourne Hip Hop Scene. He has proven with his success thus far, that his style is unique to the Australian Hip Hop Scene and he is determined to continue to be a voice and advocate for other up and coming artists like himself who don't conform to the typical Australian sound.

Shorty Mic has opened for many up and coming Australian and International artists, Gabrielle Antonio being one, as well as performing at many Melbourne and regional Victorian Hip Hop shows, including his own headlining shows. He has also toured Asia and gained a solid following from that tour.
Shorty Mic has also shared the stage and opened for renowned artists such as Madchild, Swollen Members, Mantra and Greyghost, Obie Trice, Swifty McVay of D12, Dj Unk & Cali Swag District  former Funk Volume artist Dizzy Wright, Merkules and Perth rapper COMPLETE just to name a few.

DJ Symphony and Rza of world wide known Hip Hop group Wu-Tang also called Michael directly from California to offer him a spot on the Wu-Nation Aussie Mixtape with his track titled '152 Bar Fight'. DJ Symphony personally chose this song to be the first track on the 2nd Volume of the Mixtape, a spot usually saved for high paying artists looking for exposure. The mixtape has seen over 1,600,000 downloads to date.

As a performer, Michael engages his audiences and humbly interacts with fans after his shows and on social media platforms. His stage presence is powerful and his speed rap leaves people gasping and screaming for more. His style of music is unique to the Australian Hip Hop scene and through hard work, determination and persistence he has overcome and grown as an artist and the stage is where he belongs.
